Don't Wait Until you Are Dying

DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE DYING TO FIGURE IT ALL OUT

It's amazing how many times I've known, heard of and read about people who changed their whole approach to life for the better after being told they had only a short time to live, or after being given a diagnosis of a possibly terminal illness.  After getting over the initial shock they began to appreciate the truly important things in life and ended up being happier and better adjusted than they ever were before.

Well, guess what?  Life is a terminal condition and you are dying, as are we all.  I know it can be a difficult idea to get your head around, but you know it is true.

As an emergency room doctor I have seen many people who died unexpectedly from trauma, infections, heart attacks, brain hemorrhages, etc., etc.  Some of them probably thought they had many more years left to live. And you know what?  Some of them were younger than you are.

People still die every day and many of these deaths are premature.  The undertaking business will always have customers.

Some people don't believe they're ever going to die and go along assuming they have all the time in the world to mend their ways, to pause and appriciate what is important in life.  They're kind of like the guy who, after receiving the news that he was dying of cancer, said, “ You know, I understand that everyone eventually dies.  I just thought there would be an exception made in my case.”

I'll bet you know people who seem to be on a treadmill of stress and unhappiness, who never seem to be in touch with life, the universe, their inner selves.  Maybe, off and on, you have had days when you are one of those people.

Would you do anything differently if you found out today that you have only a few weeks to live?  Would you stop and smell the roses, observe birds in flight, go to the seashore and watch the waves, really listen to a child, smile at a stranger, laugh with your friends and tell your family you love them?

You know, you don't have to wait until you're dying to figure it all out.  There's no rule carved in granite that says you cannot become enlightened now, today.

    It's simple.

You are here in this world to be happy and to do good.

You are supposed to smile and be kind.

You are a citizen of the world and all are your brothers.

Everyone has something to teach you.

You can get ready now to die and still enjoy many more years of life.

    So, don't wait.
